COMMITMENT

There was once a boy who wanted to learn the secrets of the martial arts.  He loved watching the monks on the temple grounds move in ways he had never seen anybody else move.  They moved as stealthy cats, and they fought invisible opponents.  When they struck their invisible opponents with their hands, it was like watching a snake strike.  The physical feats the monks displayed were the greatest sight he had ever witnessed.   He became so excited about the martial arts that he decided to ask the monks to teach him.

One morning he went to the temple and knocked on the great wooden door.  An old monk opened the door and looked at the boy, saying nothing.  The boy said to the monk, “I would like you to teach me how to move and strike like you.”

The monk replied, “It is much too difficult for you to learn.  Go away.”  The boy was startled, but he decided that if he returned next week, maybe a nicer monk would answer.

The next week the boy returned to the temple and knocked on the door.  The same elderly monk opened the door and stood, silently watching the boy.  “Sir,” the boy said, “I will do chores for you in return for teaching me to move and strike like you.”  The monk replied, “The work here is much too difficult for a young boy like you.  You would tire from it in no time.  Go away, and do not return for another week.”  The boy was perplexed; how could the monk know what was too difficult for him unless he allowed him to try?  Nevertheless, the boy decided he would return the next week.

Again the boy approached the temple door and knocked.  “Please, let a nicer monk answer,” he whispered to himself. The same elderly monk opened the door and silently waited for the boy to speak.  “Sir I am a hard worker and a good learner.  I know I can prove to you I can learn your ways.  Just give me a chance!”  The monk replied calmly, “I am not sure you are ready.  Go away and do not come back for another week.”  Then he closed the door.  “I am ready!” yelled the boy at the shut door, but the monk did not come back.  The boy went home, feeling defeated.  He had tried and tried, but he could not persuade the monk to teach him.  He resolved not to try anymore, but when another week had gone by, he decided to give it one more try.

The boy knocked on the door, and the same monk opened it.  “I am ready to be taught,” he said to the monk.  The monk asked, “How do you know?”  The boy answered, “Uh, well, I don’t know, sir.  I just thought that if I said that, you would teach me.  I don’t know if I am ready, but I do know that I am determined to learn, and I will not give up!”

“You will have to pull weeds in the garden, take cold showers, clean the temple, and serve the monks their meals.  Do you still want to do this?” “Yes,” the boy answered.  “Then you may enter.  You have already learned the first lesson. If you truly want something, you must practice the art of commitment.”

SPORT TEAM TRAINING (COMPETITION)

On April 16 several of our athletes on the Sport Team competed at the Indy Cup in Indianapolis, Indiana.  We have been attending this tournament for several years, as it is not too far away and a lot of fun for the athletes.  This year, Mrs. Winkler attended the tournament as a Referee.  She enjoyed very much speaking with other martial artists and school owners about Taekwondo activities.  In addition, she is able to bring to our dojang a better understanding of how poomsae is judged at tournaments.  The students that attended this tournament did well.

The next tournament that students are training to attend is Junior Olympics at the end of July in California.  We have a handful of students anticipating competing at this event.

FUNDAMENTALS OF WEAPONS

The Bo Staff Weapons class has been underway for two weeks.  We have several students participating in this class to learn the basics of Bo Staff.  This class is open to all students in the Black Belt Club.  The Bo Staff will be studied for approximately 3 months.

WEEKLY TASK SHEETS

This is something that you can have your child take responsibility for getting completed daily.  Have your child bring his/her Task Sheet to you at the end of each day and simply check off the tasks completed or discussed.  For example, a discipline activity is “Making My Bed.”  If your child hands you the sheet at the end of the day and did not make his/her bed, you can discuss it or if it was done, great!  This sheet is to get your child in a habit of completing life skill activities. When four are completed, your child earns a Martial Art Pin.  There are 30 to collect. We hope your child takes advantage of this easy way to collect special Martial Arts Pins

COURTESY AWARD

It has been quite some time since we have issued the CPR Medal.  I am sure all our students are being very courteous at school and home.  Parents, please talk to your child’s teacher about how his/her courtesy and respect is in their classroom.  If the teacher believes your child deserves our Courtesy Award, please have him/her write us a brief note.  As Courtesy is one of our Tenets of Taekwondo, we would like to have as many students as possible qualify and receive this award.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Just a reminder that when a student achieves all A’s on a school report card they qualify for a trophy.  When a student receives A’s and B’s on a report card, they qualify for a special certificate.  So, parents, please bring us a copy of your child’s report card, if they meet the requirements for a special Academic Award.

THE NEXT BELT TEST IS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, MAY 24 AT 6:30 P.M.

Belt Ceremony Friday May 27, 2011 also at 6:30 p.m.
